In this article,N-3-chloro-2-methyl-phenylmaleimide(CMPMI) was prepared from the reaction of maleic anhydride and 3-chloro-2-methylaniline in one step. The mp. of CMPMI is 73~75?The free radical copolymerization of N-P-tolymaleimide(NPTMI) with acrylonitrile was studied. The copolymer composition was calculated from the nitrogen content estimated by the MICO-kijedldahPs method and by elemental analysis. The reactivity ratios ,which had been calculated by Fineman & Ross method ,were rnptMi=1.47, raN - 0.57The copolymer's thermal properties were investigated. It was found that NPTMI effectively increased the glass transition temperature and the decomposition temperature.Copolymers of CMPMI/MMA were synthesized by emulsion polymerization ,and their thermal properties, mechanical properties and rheological behavior were investigated. The result showed that CMPMI dramatically increased the glass transition temperature and the decomposition temperature. The moderate decrease in the mechanical properties can be encountered by the decrease in the apparent shear viscosity and the improvement in the thermal properties. At the same time,namo-CaCO3 was added to the copolymers to improve the mechanical properties. The St was introduced to the system of CMPMI/MMA as the third monomer and the properties of CMPMI/MMA/St terpolymers (ECMS) were investigated. The St made the CMPMI reacted easily with MMA because the polar effect. The result showed that the thermal properties of the terpolymers were greatly improved, but the mechanical properties were decreased in some degree. The CMPMI/MMA/St terpolymers were blended with PVC to improve PVC's heat resistance. The result showed that CMPMI increased the glass transition temperature, the decomposition temperature and the tensile strength. The result illustrated that the blends showed the rheological behavior of pseudoplastic liquid. The effect of namo-CaCO3 to the PVC blends' mechanical properties were also investigated.
