As a new non -conventional machining technology concerned by machining community in the world, laser-assisted machining(LAM)is a combination of optics, material science, heat transfer, physics, mechanics and mechanical machining. Although the materials with excellent mechanical properties such as Si3N4 ceramics are more and more widely applied in engineering, their development is restricted by their poor machined ability. Much research work has proved that LAM can be a good solution to this problem. From both numerical simulation and experiment, this article has done much research work about LAM: Firstly, a laser-assisted temperature field is found, then the rule of temperature distribution and some technical parameters about the machining course are analyzed. Secondly, mechanism of LAM is specified .The energy distribution during the machining course and some material characters are analyzed , and some important technical parameters and material characters of the machined materials are tested. Finally, both numerical simulation data and experimental data are compared, and the results prove that the theoretical analyses are in good agreement with the results of the experiment. As a new method for material machining , LAM has it's own characteristics of its own. Through detailed theory analysis and experiment data , important relations among machining course and technical parameters ,such as the distance between the center of laser beam and the point of cutting tools ,rotating speed of the work piece, cutting depth, laser power and laser beam diameter on the work piece are deeply studied, and the optimum technical parameters of LAM course is gained. Experimental results show that the machining force in LAM of ceramics reduces greatly, and the removal rate of the materials increases obviously.Above all, this article has great practical value for the laser-assisted machining of ceramics.
