Ionic liquids entirely composed of cations and anions have recently been attracted much attention in organic synthesis. Being possess negligible vapour pressure, low melt point, high chemical stability etc. unique properties, ionic liquids have been proved to be the suitable green solvent for organic synthesis. This article introduces the following researchers:The room temperature ionic liquids n-butyl pyridinium nitrate ([bpyJNO3), 1-n-butyl methylimmidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim]BF4) and l-butyl-3-methylimmidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmimJPFe) were used as microwave absorbent (sensitizer) for the Knoevenagel condensation under microwave irradiation. The condensation proceeded smoothly in the presence of catalytic amount of ionic liquid to afford the desired Zi-isomers of the corresponding alkenes in high purity and with moderate to excellent yields. The Knoevenagel condensation of a series of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds proceeds smoothly in the presence of catalytically amount of the functionalized ionic liquid, l-(2-hydxoyethyl)-3-methyl imidazolium chloride, at 80℃ to afford the desired alkenes in good purity and with 82-97% yields without solvent. The reaction condition is mild and neutral, the yields are excellent, the procedure and work-up is simple.Dihydropyrimidinones and their derivatives were synthesized by Biginelli cyclocondensation reaction of aldehydes, β -ketoesters and urea (thiourea) in the presence of catalytic amounts of ionic liquid n-butyl pyridinium nitrate ([bpy]NO3) under netutral and solventless condition in 80-90% yields. The reaction condition is mild, the operation and work-up is simple and conveniently.Room temperature ionic liquids have been used as novel solvents to replace traditional volatile organic solvents in liquid-liquid extraction. We used a hydrophobic room temperature ionic liquid l-butyl-3-methylimmidazolium hexafluorophosphateas an extractant to study liquid-liquid extraction of organic acid.
