Activated sludge process, which consumes the substrates in wastewater by microorganism's metabolism, has been extensively utilized for the secondary treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater. The activated sludge process is a biological one, which has characteristic of complicated mechanism and time varying. It is especially essential to predict the results of treatment by simulation. So many researchers recognize the importance of mathematics simulation research of the wastewater treatment process. This paper summarized the development of activated sludge's model, and introduced the activated sludge model No.1(ASM1) intensively. The paper developed a simulation software for the continuous flow and intermittent aeration technology with completely mixed activated sludge process(CFIA),based on Visual Basic6.0 and ASM1.The simple experimental methods for determination of ASM1's thirteen components such as seven carbonaceous organic matter, four nitrogenous matter is important to apply the model. The paper summarized existing experimental methods for ASM1's components, and bring forward a suit of methods for the application. The developed simulation software was calibrated and validated by the real operation data of WWTP Chengnan in Chongqing. The results show its simulation effect well. The effluent quality was predicted by the software when the conditions was changed, such as intermittent aeration operation cycle's time and influent volume, and the optimal operation cycle was determined.
