Dendrimers consisting of highly branched structure are controlled by chemical structure and its functional group as well as molecular size and molecular shape in molecular level. They are monodisperse macromolecules with a large number of functional groups and applied in surfactant, catalyst, nanocomposite, metal nanomaterial photoconductive material, etc. Syntheses, properties and applications on dendrimers have been studied more completely during the last 10 years. Currently, The hot point in this field focuses on synthesis of dendrimers with new structure and functionalization of dendrimers available. Dendrimers with NHa on the periphery have been synthesized and functionalized in this paper, the work as follows:1. Dendrihmers with NH2 on the periphery are synthesized from ethylene diamine (EDA) and methyl acrylate (MA), methanol as solvent, by Michael addition reaction and amidation.2. Dendrimers with stearyl groups on the periphery are synthesized by amidation using dendrihmers with NH2 on the periphery and stearyl chloride (SC) as raw materials. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, ratio of reactants and solvent content on the yield have been studied.3. The quaternary ammonium salt of dendrimer with three stearyl groups on the periphery is prepared by methylation and quaternization with methyl iodide. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time and ratio of reactants on the yield are studied.4. These dendritic structures are characterized by FT1R, 1H NMR, and elementary analysis.5. Some dendrimers with stearyl groups on the periphery have surface activity significantly. It is found that these dendrimers can enhance solubility of HjO in toluene.6. Dendrimers with stearyl groups on the periphery as hydrogels in toluene are studied. The resultsshows hydrogels exhibit excellent temperature -sensitive behaviors.
