In this paper preparations of seleno-chitosan and arsenic-chitosan have been studied. The characterization results of FT/IR, EA, DAT indicated that SeOs2" and AsO4" are attached to C2 amino and C6 hydroxyl group of chitosan. Selenium and arsenic both are inorganic elements being both toxic and bioactive. Recently, the application of selenium and arsenic compounds to the anticancer therapeutic agents have been received much attention. Relatively less toxic and safe anticancer organic selenium and arsenic compounds are the best candidate for this purpose. In this paper, the preparation of selenium and arsenic chitosan adducts or complexes were prepared by chemical treatment of chitosan with sodium selenite and sodium arsenite. The prepared products were characterized by various methods. The antitumor experiments in vivo show that chitosan. seleno-chitosan and arsenic-chitosan have the antitumor activities. The rate of antitumor of chitosan, seleno-chitosan and arsenic-chitosan is 15.18%, 19.35% and 35% respectively. The toxicology experiments show that seleno-chitosan and arsenic-chitosan are both less toxic than inorganic selenium and arsenic compounds. The LDso of seleno-chitosan and arsenic-chitosan is 6.3 and 5.5 times less than inorganic selenium and arsenic compounds. Seleno-chitosan and arsenic-chitosan can effectively inhibit cancer cell growth indicating that they have the possibility to be used as a less toxic antitumor therapeutic agents.
