Surface graft copolymerization of acrylic acid(AA) and Vinylpyrrolidone onto HDPE powder through ultraviolet as well as the structure and properties of the grafted HDPE were studied through FTIR, ESCA, SEM, AFM, UV spectrum, contact angle with water, peel strength, water absorption and particle diameter measurements. With the ultraviolet irradiation time, monomer concentration, initiator concentration, temperature and the grafting degree of AA onto HDPE powder increases. The grafted HDPE particle surface becomes more smoother. After absorbed water, the grafted particle diameter and grafted PAA layer' s mobility increase apparently. As the grafting degree increase, the contact angle to water of AA-grafted HDPE powder decreases. The peel strength of HDPE/steel joint with the grafted HDPE used as hot melt adhesive is enhanced as compared with that joint with ungrafted HDPE powder. After graft copolymerization under the conditions of AA concentration 5phr, temperature 90℃ and reaction time 5min, the HDPE/steel joint with the grafted sample breaks in HDPE matrix when peel strength tests.
