Not affecting bulk properties , surface photografting is the best way to introduce functional groups onto the surface of bulk. In this paper,UV photografting of acrylic acid (AA) and methyl acrylate (MA) onto the surface of high-density polyethylene (HDFE) microporous membrane was investigated under nitrogen atmosphere, on which initiator benzophenone (BP) was coated earlier. the details as followed:1. The effects of monomers , initiator and inhibitor concentration and irradiation time were studied. We found that the solvent water and acetone had different effect on the grafting degree. Water had the more active effect than acetone. We also studied the relations between grafting degree and pure water flux(PWF). PWF increased first and then decreased with the grafting degree. The determination of water absorption showed that the absorbed water of membrane increased with the grafting degree.2. FTIR spectroscopy measurement indicated that AA and MA had been grafted onto HDPE. The graph of Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC) showed the drops of crystallinity of HDPE. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) pictures demonstrated the monomers grafted mainly on the surface of membrane. It also showed the grafting of monomer pluged the pores of the membrane. The intensity of the HDPE fiber membrane was tested. The intensity of fiber decreased after grafting modification. The bulk surface photografting process succeeded in the hydrophile modification of HDPE membrane. compared to monomer AA, MA was more effectual on the modification of HDPE membrane.
