Hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride-carboxymethyl chitosans (HA-CMCHS) were prepared separately through four different kind of processes, and the properties of each sample were analyzed. The structure, degree of substitution, conglutination, moisture absorption, moisture retention, antibacterial activity, PH stability and compatibility with surfactant of HA-CMCHS are studied.IR spectra revealed that the most carboxymethyl substituents were attached on O atom of chitosan, and hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride substitution occurred mainly on N atom of chitosan. By comparing each IR spectra figure of four different samples, it is concluded that No3 and No4 preparation schemes are more feasible, because the degree of substitution can reach a higher level.In the two organic function group substitution reactions, adopt orthographical experiment, considering following factors: reaction temperature, reaction time, the ratio of the materials and the proportion in the solvent. Then the optimum technological conditions for preparation is respectively explored. The optimum carboxymethylation condition is as follow: the reaction temperature 55 ℃, the reaction time 4h, the mass of 4M chloride acid 60ml, and the volume ratio isopropanol/water in the reaction solvent 9:1. The degree of substitution is 0.889; The optimum quatemization condition is: the reaction temperature 75 ℃, the reaction time 10h, the mol ratio of hydropropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride to raw material 5:1, the degree of substitution is 0.912.Under high relative humidity conditions(RH 81% and 43%), the moisture absorption ability of HA-CMCHS is similar to HA, better than glycerin; Only under low relative humidity conditions such as in silica gel, the HA-CMCHS release some water absorbed and the process is slower than HA, which indicate that the moisture retention ability of HA-CMCHS is better than HA. The relativity of conglutination and moisture absorption and retention properities is also studied. The figure showed the hydroscopicity of HA-CMCHS increased with the decreasing in molecular weight and moisture retention capacity increased with increasing in molecular weight.Using the derivants of chitin or chitosan is becoming a new tendency in the field of cosmetics. It's excellent moisture absorption and retention ability guarantee the bright perspective of Its usage.
