Continued interest in phthalocyanines results from their wide application as substrates for semiconductor, gas-detector, phtovoltaic devices, photodynamic therapy and nonlinear optical devices et al. Sulfonated aluminum phthalocyanine containing halogen substituent is convenient to practical use because of its excellent solubility in water. It is widely used in photodynamic therapy, bleaching textiles and sterilization et al. Few research has made in this aspect in our country , so it is important to study the synthesis and application of this kind of compound.In this paper, aluminum phthalocyanines containing halogen substituent are first synthesized through the condensation reaction of 4-halogenphthalic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, urea and aluminum chloride in the presence of ammonium molybdate and sodium xylenesulfate . The process is optimized by orthogonal experiment. The yields of aluminum phthalocyanine containing chloro substituent and bromo substituent are 82% and 57% respectively.Water soluble sulfonated aluminum phthalocaynines containing halogen substituent can by got by sulfonation and saponification of the above mentioned intermediates. The influence of the amount of solvent to yield is studied. The results showed that the amount of solvent has little effect on the yield as the mol ratio of phthalocyanine, chlorosulfonic and thionyl chloride decreased from 1:40:18 to 1:25:10. All the yields are higher than 95%. The structure of target compounds is characterized by UV-VIS, IR, elemental analysis and atom absorbance..The water-soluble sulfonated aluminum phthalocyanines containing halogen substituent and sulfonated aluminum were used to bleach cotton fabric stained with tea and dye. The values of whiteness were measured. Results showed that this kind of compounds has excellent photobleaching property. The bleaching effect of phthalocyanines containing halogen substituent is better than the one that is not substituted.Another important application of sulfonated aluminum phthalocyanines containing halogen substituent is its photo sterilization. When they were applied to combat Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538, good antimicrobial effects were achieved with only very small concentration of active substances, for example 0.1 ppm and 1ppm .
