The thesis deals with two series of novel structural schiffbase. One series is the Schiff base(AP) of N, N' -malonamidebis (salicylaldimine-5-sulphonate) and the Schiff base(BP) of N, N' -bis (salicylaldimine-5-sulphonate), the other is the Schiff base(SP) of sodium salicylaldimine-5-sulphonate thiosemicarbazone, as well as twenty -three coordination compounds of their Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Mn( II) and Co( II) complexes have been synthesized.Elemental analysis, TGA, IR, UV/vis and molar electro-conductivity measurement were used to characterize all the compounds. The ligands were identified by 'H-NMR and MS additionally. The chemical formulae and possible structures of the compounds were proposed based on the characterization. The ligand AP is quadridentate, coordinating with the metal ions through imidic nitrogen(s) and phenolic oxygen(s). The ratio of the ligand with the metal ions is 1:1. These complexes adopt square geometry. All the complexes are 2:1 electrolyte. The ligand BP is also quadridentate, coordinating with the metal ions through imidic nitrogen(s) and phenolic oxygen(s). The ratio of the ligand with the metal ions is 1:1. These complexes adopt square geometry. All the complexes are 2:1 electrolyte. The ligand SP is dridentate, coordinating with the metal ions through two nitrogen atoms from imine and amine and one oxygen atom from hydroxybenzene. The ratio of the ligand with the metal ions is 1:1. These complexes adopt square geometry. All the complexes are 1:1 electrolyte.Some of three series compounds were tested by illumination method for their effect on relative survival rate in paddy seed sprouts and almost all the tested complexes promoted the relative survival rate from 10ppm to 1ppm. Of all the tested complexes, SP series complexes have higher efficacy.Some of three series compounds were experimented for their influences on superoxide dismutase(SOD) and peroxidase(POD) in paddy seed sprouts by illumination method. Three ligands hold in SOD and POD , but complexes can activate SOD and POD from 10ppm to lppm and SP series complexes show better activity.Epoxidation of styrene catalysted by some complexes of AP and SP series as model compounds of oxygenase has been studied and the effect of construction of ligand, PH as well as reaction temperature on epoxidation are investigated.
