In this thesis, four Schiff base ligands containing pyridyl ring and twenty -four coordination compounds of Cu( II), Ni( II), Zn( II), Mn( II), Co( II) and VO( II) with these ligands have been synthesized. The four schiff-base ligands are N,N -bis(salicylidene)-2,6-pyridinediamine(L), N,N -bis(5-bromosalicylidene) -2,6-pyridinediamine(5-BrL), N,N -bis(5-nitrosalicylidene)-2,6-pyridinediamine (5-NO2L), N,N -bis-(3-nitrosalicylidene)-2,6-pyridinediamme (3-NO2L).Elemental analysis, IR, UV/vis, TG-DTA and molar electro-conductivity measurement were used to characterize all the compounds. The ligands were identified by 'H-NMR and MS additionally. The chemical formulae and possible structures of the compounds were proposed based on the characterization. The ligands are quadridentate, and they coordinate with the metal ions through imidic nitrogen(s) and phenolic oxygen(s). Besides the vanadyl complexes adopt square-pyramidal geometry, these bivalent metal ions all adopts square geometry. All the complexes are nonelectrolyte.5-BrL series compounds and some of the complexes were tested by illumination method for their effect on relative survival rate in paddy seed sprouts and almost all the tested complexes promoted the relative survival rate at proper concentrations. Of all the tested complexes, 5-BrL series complexes have higher efficacy.5-BrL series complexes were experimented for their influences on superoxide dismutase(SOD) and peroxidase(POD) in paddy seed sprouts by illumination method. All the tested complexes, except for 5-BrL, can activate SOD and POD at proper concertrations and Cu( II) complexes show better activity. All vanadyl complexes were experimented for their catalytic activity of epoxidation of styrene. VO-5-NO2L has the highest catalytic activity and the complex has higher catalytic activity at alkalescent atmosphere.
