Chrome tannage that can make excellent leather products is the most important tanning system in the leather industry so that there have not other tanning agents better than chrome agent for more than 100 years. From the point of view of health and safety its pollution problems make its future implementation questionable. In the past 20 years different systems have been developed to replace the chrome tanning. Tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium (THP) salt as a material with good crosslinking power, excellent sterilization and antisepsis property has been used in the flame-retardant field and antisepsis auxiliaries. Since 1990s, the THP salt has been applied to the water treatment field. And it was surveyed recently for the sterilization and antisepsis properties in the leather industry. THP salt is a non-toxicity and easy biodegradability. Using THP salt to make a new organic tanning agent and rearching new tanning agent tanning power will be much significant.Up to now, there has been little information reported about phosphonium tanning agent in our country. The quantitative analysis of THP salt was investigated in the paper as well as the characteristic of collagen combined with THP salt and tannage of the complex phosphonium salt syntan made in this experement.The method to determine THPC was studied in the paper. The appropriate analysis was performed in sodium acetate buffer solution at pH=5 and the fading reaction agent is methylene blue, which concentration was 1.0mg/mL. The absorption wavelength was at 665nm in UV2501. The linearity was established for THPC in the range (0.1mg/L) and the correlation coefficient was 0.9116(n=8).The phosphonium salt (SG-1) was synthesized in the device devised byourselves. The best match was w(A1P).7w(HCH0).tm(HC1) = 1:9:2 according to the results of orthogonal experiment, and shrinkage temperature of the leather with light color treated with SG-1 is 78, then, the physical-mechanical property of sheep garment leather prepared with SG-1 measured up. SG-1 was condensed with nitride on the best synthetic conditions as follow: (SG-l)/n(nitride)=1.5, temperature is 80-100, time is 4h, and then SG-2 could be produced. The Ts of animal hide tanned with this production is 84. SG-2 can give the leather the property of wash resistance and excellent color. Retanning the white-wet with different retanning agents can get different hand. The physical-mechanical property of leather made with SG-2 measured up too. As we all know, the term of isoeletric point is very important in the making-leather, especially in the beamhouse, and it is well known that the isometric point value of the glutin treated with chromium increased while declined treated with formaldehyde. It is interesting to note that the isoeletric point value of the glutin treated with phosphonium salt declined at first and then increased.
