Functionally Gradient Material (FGM) is a kind of new functional material which is applied to satisfy the working conditions of limiting ambient temperature, eg. extraordinarily high temperature or great temperature fall, due to the requirements of a serial of high and new technology in airspace. At present, Japan is among the top most place in the study of thermal stress of FGM all over the world. The model of thermal stress of FGM is established and relevant Computer-Aided Design software system has been developed. However, domestic study in this field is in the first time step. The study and manufacturing of FGM is still in exploring stage and systematic theoretical guiding and scientific laws are in shortage in our country. This paper summarized the analytical method of thermal stress of FGM. A property database for all kinds of materials is established and an intelligent design system is developed in order to alleviate thermal stress of FGM in different thermal protection situation. This software system has supplied a gap in domestic study field of FGMS and has great guiding significance in the development of FGM.Firstly, the paper summarized the situation of study and application at home and abroad. The basic study method of FGM is analyzed and the great significance of development of FGM is presented. Secondly, the mathematical model of thermal stress of FGM is analyzed. For convenience, the simplified model is presented through the introduction of approximate treatment and linearization theory. Then, the basic principles and methods of the design of FGM is introduced and the software system is developed and implemented by the method "converse design".Finally, based on the mathematical model and design method of FGM, an intelligent design system of FGM is developed through computer programming. This software system analyzed the distributions of temperature field and thermal stress field of FGM in different thermal protection situation. It provides all kinds of solutions of manufacturing of FGM, including material selection and ingredient distribution, etc. And the optimal design solution is suggested through visual graphic compare and analysis.
