Layered and pillared materials are a kind of multifunctional materials that develop in recent years. They have great varieties and many different preparative methods. For its chemical and thermal stability, anti-acid and anti-basic properties, this kind of materials are widely used as ion-exchangers like ion-exchange resin (IER), shape-selective adsorbents and catalysts/catalysts supports like zeolite. Much attention has been paid to these materials by in- and external researchers.Intercalation chemistry as a frontier branch of science also develops rapidly. It relates to inorganic, organic, analytical, physical chemistry, as well as solid state chemistry, physics and material science. People have tried to introduce different guests, such as proton, metal ion, organic molecule, metal coordination compound, polymer and protein into layered and pillared materials for adjusting their interlayer structures and functions. Then we can get some new materials with optic, electric, magnetic or catalytic properties, which have wide application prospects.Zirconium phosphate and its derivatives have been mainly studied in intercalation chemistry. A lot of literatures have reported the intercalation behavior of a-zirconium phosphate (abbreviated as a-ZrP), but very few papers dealt with the intercalation behavior of zirconium phosphate-phosphonate, which had a layered structure similar to that of a-ZrP. Taking advantage of the diversity of organic synthetic chemistry, we can synthesize organo-phosphonic acids with different organic groups, then to prepare different zirconium phosphate-phosphonate. Adjusting the ratio of organic and inorganic phosphorous acids, we can prepare special materials with different interlayer distance according to requirements of different applications.
