Confronted with more and more serious environment problems, many institutes in China carry out all kinds of basic researches about wastes disposal. For a long time, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposal has been the hot topics. But the attack of SARS in 2004 shifted people's attention from MSW disposal to hazardous waste (HW) disposal. But unfortunately in China, knowledge about HW disposal is very limited and it's out of practice to import other countries' technologies totally.This paper is based on National Natural Science Foundation (NO.50276055) and bring out some basic studies about HW disposal.Part I .In this paper, components about source, separation of HW in China and foreign countries, developing and developed countries are discussed. Comparisons between all kinds of HW disposal technologies and devices are also discussed. Incineration is believed to be the most developed and widely used method while rotary kiln is the most suitable device for HW incineration. A rotary kiln has been constructed according typical HW which are supposed to be disposed.Part II. PE particles are applied to study their motion characteristics in the rotary kiln. Feeding rate, the kiln incline degree and the kiln rolling speed are adjusted to study the changes of particles mean residence time (MRT), mean volume flow (MVF) and loading rate in the kiln. This part of knowledge is vital for setting up materials motion characteristics model and for carrying out real thermal disposal study on the kiln.Part III. Thermal gravity characteristics of 6 typical HW are studied on a thermal balance. Influences from different heating rate and different atmosphere are studied. And on the bases of TG, DTG curves, kinetics of the 6 typical HW are calculated.Part IV. Electric plating sludge is a typical HW which containing many kinds of heavy metals. In this paper, a tube furnace was applied to simulate real furnace thermal disposal condition. Information about electric plating sludge mass decreasing is gained. Heavy metals partitioning under all kinds of conditions are studied. And heavy metals' leaching characteristics in the disposed sludge are also studied. Micro characteristics about disposed sludge and Cr's chemical compounds in disposed sludge are discussed.
