The study made comprehensive experiments concerning machine processing properties (including planning, boring, mortising, shaping, turning, sanding and crosscutting properties) and other related properties (i.e, long-term dimensional stability, adhesion strength, painting film adhering capacity, painting film wearing and consuming value and wood surface hardness), on Butula alnoides and Castanopsis hystrix plantation wood in compare with Quercus mongolia, which is widely used domestically as the furniture and decoration utilization. On the basis of the above experimental results, various of machine processing properties are classified and at the same time, individual properties are assigned to the corresponding grades according to different criterion. The results show as follows: (1) As far as machine processing properties are concerned, such as planning, sanding, boring, shaping, mortising, crosscutting and turning properties, all the indexes of Butula alnoide and Quercus mongolia are in excellent grade except turning property, which are in good and middle grade respectively. All the indexes of Castanopsis hystrix are excellent, exclusive of turning and mortising property, which are in good grade. (2) In respect of the other related properties, the adhesion strength, painting film adhering capacity of Butula alnoides, Castanopsis hystrix and Quercus mongolia belong to excellent grade with similar long-term dimensional stability. The total of radial and tangential swelling coefficient of the three species are 0.0658%,0.0701% and 0.0670% in turn. With regard to painting film wearing and consuming value of the three species, the quality grades are good, middle and good in order. The surface hardness on different wood surfaces of three species is 11.0MPa, 7.7MPa,and 13.0MPa in sequence on radial surface, 14.2MPa, 10.6MPa, and 12.5MPa on tangential surface, and 33.0MPa, 26.6MPa, and 38.1MPa on end surface respectively. (3) The comprehensive quality grade value of the three species, namely, Butula alnoides, Castanopsis hystrix and Quercus mongolia, are 4.32, 4.07 and 4.22, respectively, which demonstrate the overall quality of machine processing properties and related properties are within the range of excellent grade. This suggests that the three species are all such good materials for solid wood products that they are suitable for manufacturing high value–added products, such as furniture and decorative materials. (4) From the results of shaping experiment, it can be concluded that, it is appropriate for Butula alnoides to be clockwise shaped in parallel region, and counter-clockwise shaped in cross region and end surface, also, for Castanopsis hystrix to be clockwise shaped in cross region, and counter-clockwise shaped in parallel region and end surface, as well as to be clockwise shaped in all the three regions for Quercus mongolia. (5) As far as Butula alnoides and Castanopsis hystrix plantation wood are concerned, the profile arithmetic average deviation, in symbol of Ra, is smaller after sanded by 80 to120 spec sand paper than that twice sanded by 120 spec paper, the fluctuating range of the former is smaller too. For Quercus mongolia, the opposite trend was observed. In the meantime, the surface quality of Quercus mongolia after planning treatment (rotating velocity of planning blades at 5000 r/min, the amount of cutting marks per inch of 40, machining thickness of 0.8 mm) is superior to that sanded by 80 to 120 spec sand paper.
