Schiff bases and their metallic complexes have been widely investigated for more than a century. These complexes are known to be biologically important and serve as catalysts. On the other side, there is considerable interest in the use of benzimidazole complexes to model the active site of a variety of metalloenzymes such as carbonic anhydrase and carboxypeptidase. Because of their parasitic and antiviral activities, benzimidazole and their derivates compounds have been widely investigated in commercial medical fields. The study on oxygen carrier is of significance in military and civil applications, especially in the fields of dioxygen separation, metal anti-corrosion and keeping fruits fresh. But there are some differences in their abilities to binding oxygen. In order to interpret the machanics to absorb oxygen from crystal structure, kinetic analysis was used. 1. Recent development of oxygenated complexes was reviewed. Synthesis and prospect for Schiff bases and benzimidazole derivatives were discussed. 2. N0SP-bis(4-methoxybenzyl)l, 4-butanediamine (I), NK-bis(4-methoxy benzyl)-ethylen-ediamine(II), KN'-bis(4-methoxybenzyl) 13i2ropylenediamine (III), N,N' -bis-(4-hydroxylbenzyl)1,4-butanediamine(IV), ,N'-bis(3-methoxy-4-hydroxylbenzyl)l,2-propylenediamine(V), ,N'-bis(4-hydroxyl-3-methoxy-benzyl)-r,3:propylenediamine(VI), N,N'-bis(4-hydroxyl-3-methoxybenzyl)l, 4-butane-diamie(VII), were synthesized and characterized by UV-vis, IR, 13C NMR, MS, and crystal structure. 3. Cobalt(II) complexes with I, II, IV, VII as ligands were synthesized and the oxygenation ability was studied. 4. N, N, N'N'-tetra (benzimidazolmethylene)ethylenediamine-cobalt(II) compl-exes were sythesized and the oxygenation ability was studied, and the oxygenation ability was then compared with that of Schiff base-Cobalt(II) complexes.
