Schiff base can be prepared by the reaction of aldehydes or ketones co ntaining-C=O bond with amine compounds.During the reactions the nucleophilic addition takes place,then the protons transfer,at last the productions can be obtained after eliminating water molecule.There are nitrogen atoms which have strong coordinatio n ability in Schiff base,which lead to the Schiff base ligands readily coordinate to various transition metals.Transition metal complexes with Schiff-base ligands have attracted much attention due to their intriguing properties and potential applications in catalysis,optical,biological relevance,and potentially interesting magnetic properties.By inhibiting the activity of urease can solve the low utilization ratio of agricultural fertilizer,the animal ammonia poisoning and some human disease s caused by urease.Therefore,the study of urease inhibitors is particularly important.We choose the Schiff base and reduced Schiff bases which have interesting biological activities as ligands,to coordinate with metal ions which possess urease inhibitory activities,to form metal complexes.What we want to do is to explore novel urease inhibitors.This paper divides into four sections:??Schiff bases and their metal complexes were reviewed.And,the application of Schiff base complexes,especially in the fields of biological activities,was introduced.??Twelve Schiff base complexes with fluoro-substituted salicylaldehyde as precursor have been synthesized.They are three C u(?),Mn(?),Mo(?)mononuclear complexes,four C u(?),Zn(?),Cd(?),Fe(?I)dinucle ar complexes and five Cu(?),Zn(?),Co(?),N i(?)multi-nuclear complexes.The complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction,ultraviolet spectrum and infrared spectrum analyses.??Ten reduced Schiff base complexes with salicylaldehyde as precursor have been synthesized.They are two Ni(?)mononuclear complexes,five Ni(?),Zn(?),Co(?)dinuclear complexes and three C u(?),Zn(?)multi-nuclear complexes.The complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction,ultraviolet spectrum and infrared spectrum analysis.??The urease inhibitory activity of the complexes have been studied.Some of the complexes show excellent properties.
