The pollution of atmospheric particles is more and more serious. The atmospheric particles do great harm to environment and human bodies. In this paper an overview of recent advances and developments in the phsical and chemic characterization, toxic effect and source apportionment of atmospheric particles is presented. And the paper introduce research development tendency of atmospheric particles. This paper give a concise introduction of the method which is used to describing the surface topography of atmospheric particles—fractal and multifractal theory.This paper discusses the fractal characterization of atmospheric particles based on the source apportionment, formation mechanism and images of SEM (scanning electron microscope) photos. Several kinds of method of estimating the fractal dimension: adsorption, small angle scattering, SEM photos analysis are introduced. Especially the FD-PIFS method is expounded. However, they are simple fractal dimensions that are estimated by all these methods. Fractal dimension can describe the surface topography holistically and roughly. It can't elaborate the subtle information of atmospheric particle's surface . For this , we discuss the multifractal characterization of atmospheric particle's surface, and express it. At the same time, we introduce several methods of how to estimate the multifractal spectrum whichcan reflect the overall characterization of the surface topography.Atmospheric particle has complicated surface. Its adsorption of poisonous gas molecules in the air is complicated. This paper overview the adsorption models development from classic models to fractal models. Based on the fractal adsorption model the multifractal adsorption model is proposed. The multifractal adsorption model can reflect adsorption on multifractal surface. And then, the multifractal adsorption model is analysed and discussed. It is found that the multifractal adsorption model can explan the problem that in different press regions get different fractal dimensions perfectly. Furthermore multifractal adsorption model canelaborate the subtle adsorption in different regions.
