Because of the specialty of its molecular structure, the amphiphilic polymer has a lot of characteristics. The random amphiphilic polymer was one kind of amphiphilic copolymers. They were easier prepared and had its special features as emulsifiers, dispersants, viscosity increasers, surfactants and so on in many industrial fields. Now, to get an amphiphilic polymer with high molecular weight and low surface tension, to study its applications as emulsifiers and dispersants in latex polymerization are the hotpot of this field. In this study, the amphiphilic copolymer, poly [Methylacrylic Acid(MAA), Stearyl Methacrylate(SMA), Polylethylene Glycol Methacrylate(PEGMA)], was synthesized by the conventional radical polymerization. We obtained a serial of novel random copolymers with various molecular weights and different polymer composition by changing the dosage of the reactants. These novel amphiphilic copolymers were studied by IR and their solution properties were studied too. The results showed that these novel amphiphilic copolymers could be prepared by the conventional radical polymerization used in this article. Their viscosity value in 2-propand solution and the surface tension in aqueous solution changed with the copolymer concentration in solution, so they have the ability of reducing the surface tension and they can form micelles in 2-propand and aqueous solution, CMC=0.001g/ml,But their effect was lower than low molecular weight surfactants. We also found that its solution properties were affected by the polymer composition and polymer molecular weight. When the molecular weight of the polymers increased, the ability of reducing the surface tension in aqueous solution decreased, their viscosity in 2-propand solution increased but the molecular weight has effects on CMC in aqueous solution. When the dosage of the PEG-MA increased, the viscosity in 2-propand solution increased but the CMC in aqueous solution decreased. Their conductivities value in aqueous solution increased with the increasing of the dosage of MAA. Temperature was also one of the factors that affected their viscosity value in 2-propand solution and the conductivity value in aqueous solution.
