Our work focused on the modification of the monolithic column. The monolithic column was coated with a cationic surfactant, or first coated with a nonionic surfactant and then a cationic surfactant. The coated column can be used as the anion-exchange column to separate and analysis different anions with direct UV detection or indirect UV detection. Using the two different coating processes, the column showed different capacities in separating the same anions, and then we discussed the main reason of it. This article consists of two parts. The first part: summarized the development of ion chromatography and IC columns, and then compared the different methods of modification the columns using dymanic coating and static coating. The second part: coated the monolithic column with cationic surfactant, and then used the coated column in separating different anions. After coating the column with cationic surfactant, the column was first coated with noionic surfactant and then with cationic surfactant, the behavior of separation was compared and we discussed the main reason of the difference. The first part: summarize the development of ion chromatography and IC column. Ion chromatography has been a useful method in analysising ions. It has been applied in many fields, such as environment analysis, food analysis, and pharmaceutical analysis. The analytical column is the most important part in the IC system, is has developed quickly, many new type of columns haven been invented. At the same time, many methods have been used to modification the column in order to improve the separation of ions and to shorten the analysis time. The most popular way was to modification the surface of the column by coating surfactant. The second part: through dynamic coating, the monolithic column was coated with cationic surfactant, using direct UV detection or indirect UV detection to separate anions, sweeteners and preservatives. Then we coated the monolithic column first with nonionic surfactant and then the cationic surfactant, compared with the behavior of the monolithic column just coated with cationic surfactant in separatinganions, discussed the main reason for the difference.Monolithic column is a new type column, it is good for fast analysis, but at the same time, most monolithic columns are ODS columns which have no ion-exchange site and most used in HPLC. Coating the monolithic column with surfactant is a simple way to give the monolithic monolithic the exchanger site, it can be used in ion chromatography to separate ions, and also we get a satisfactory result.
