Activated sludge wastewater process has one hundred year's history and many models based on it are proposed in which the Activated Sludge Model issued by the International Water Association (IWAQ) is most popular .In 1987, IWAQ issued the Activated Sludge Model No.1 (ASM1) which has been widely used In many developed countries in design, performance administration, nitrogen and phosphorus removal upgrading and development of new wastewater treatment technology and process. However this has seldom been reported In China. In the study, some research is constructed based on the Activated Sludge Model No.l(ASMl) :The Bioreactor and settling tank are important element in activated sludge process. So in the paper, ASM1 and TakacsSettling Velocity Model are studied and combined to form the Activated Sludge System Model.Based on the SIMULINK toolbox in MATLAB, a model software to simulate activated sludge process is realized and then adjusted by COST simulation benchmark 624&682.Based on the GUI toolbox in MATLAB, graphic interface is designed and influent characteristics, model parameter are inputted and data are outputted either by graph or chart.Based on the software, a municipal WWTP is simulated. First regular data in the WWTP are converted to needed data to simulate, then model parameter is adjusted to meet the actual WWTP data. Later dynamic simulation is done by changing influent flow, oxygen concentration and sludge reflux ratio.Based on the software, a different process is designed to upgrade nitrogen removal in the WWTP. By analyzing the volumetric ratio of aeration tank and anoxic tank , oxygen concentration and recirculating effluent flow ratio, the optimum design is reached. The results of research show that simulation based on ASM1can simulate the performance of activated sludge process and provide valuable references for directing the biological nitrogen removal upgrading of existing WWTPs and it is worthy of carrying out a further research and extension in our country.
