The modern machinery manufacturing is developing at the roboticized and unmanned direction, for example Computerized Numerical Control(CNC), Flexible Manufacture System(FMS) and Computer Integrated Manufacture System(CIMS). Controlling chip is the key problem that during machining process, if the modernization manufacturing can be realized. Up to now, the problem of the control chip of steel and difficult machining material cannot be solved yet, so lots of flexible manufacture processes use only cast iron. The control chip must be solved immediately in order to realizing the advanced technologies. The traditional method of exploitation tools has many shortages, for example long exploitation periods, excessive material wastage, inefficient work and high machining cost. In allusion to these problems, emulation and virtual reality are applied to the machining. World Tool Kit(WTK) and OpenGL are linked to the project established in environment of Visual C++6.0; On analyzing and researching the theory of breaking chip, the mathematics models of chip's forming,curling and breaking are set up; Using C++ to program the mathematics models, the table virtual reality environment is built; In the environment, chip's forming and breaking is realized in virtual reality under different machining condition; The virtual reality system can shorten periods, increase efficiency and reduce cost, consequently selecting tool grooves. The machining virtual reality system excels to the traditional machining emulation system. Firstly, the virtual reality system not only emulates the relative movement but also displays the phenomenon of cutting material; Secondly, the system builds the relation of the cutting parameters and tool groove parameters affecting the chip shapes. On the program running, the chip shapes change with the tool groove parameters changing; Thirdly, the system configures LCD glasses. It makes observer watch the 3D scene on the common screen and strengthens the interactivity between the man and the computer.
