Epoxy(EP)/Montmorillonite(MMT) nanocomposite is prepared using diglyci -dyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) epoxy , organic-MMT and 4,4'-diamino diphenyl methane (DDM) as raw materials by intercalation polymerization method in this dissertation. The microstructure of EP/MMT nanocomposite is characterized by XRD and TEM. The formation of the EP/MMT nanocomposite is investigated. It is the first time that the electric properties of the nanocomposite is studied by impedance analyzer and ZC-36 insulation tester, etc. At the same time, other research on the mechanical properties, thermal properties and dimension stability of the nanocomposite are also studied using impact tester, electrical universal testing machine, Thermal Gravimetrical Analysis(TGA). The result from experiments gives the following information: 1) The exothermic activity of curing reaction between the gallery of MMT leads the MMT easily to be intercalated and exfoliated. The curing reaction is catalysed by the ammonium ions attached on the MMT. The nanocomposite shows nearly exfoliated structure when the content of MMT is 2%; 2) The impact properties and the tensile properties are dramatically improved than those of epoxy. The mechanical enhancement is due to the exfoliation and dispersion of MMT in epoxy; 3)Comparing with epoxy, the heat resistance is slightly improved when MMT is added; 4)The dielectric properties of the EP/MMT nanocomposite show pretty different from epoxy. The layer structure of MMT and the strong force between Epoxy and MMT make the dielectric constant and dielectric loss lower than that of epoxy. The research on the EP/MMT nanocomposite demonstrates that such materials have better universal properties and will be used widely some day.
