The catalyzed iron inner electrolysis (CIIE) process is a new developed method for wastewater treatment. In this process, zero-valent cupper is adopted as cathode to form the galvanic cells with zero-valent iron, which make the reduction capacity of zero-valent iron and the efficiency of electro-chemical reaction improved. It is easier for the refractory organic pollutants to turn into biodegradable matters through this process.The pilot-scale experiment using a process, catalyzed iron inner electrolysis was simultaneously conducted to treat the chemical industrial wastewater in Taopu wastewater treatment plant (Taopu-WWTP) in Shanghai. The removal efficiencies of main pollutants were studied and the causes were discussed. The pretreatment effect was indicated by the variations of the index such as COD, color degree, phosphate, pH etc. Results showed that COD, color degree and phosphate had good removal efficiency with the pretreatment method while pH value had a rise. Besides the effect of DO concentrations was studied. Results showed that dissolved oxygen has great influence on the process. The removal effects of COD and color are different under anoxic, aerobic and micro-aerobic condition respectively. The removal rates of COD and color were obtained under anoxic condition, averaged as 14% and 42%, respectively, while averaged as 44% and 34% under aerobic condition, and averaged as 54.5% and 43% under micro-aerobic condition. Besides some problems related to industrial process were discussedIn the catalyzed iron inner electrolysis (CIIE) process, chemical copper-plate is adopted as cathode to form the galvanic cells with zero-valent iron to treat Acid Red GR, nitrobenzene, mixed chemical wastewater in Taopu industry zone, and other dye, and compared with the effect of the process with copper as its cathode. Results showed that the removal effects of the two processes are similar. As the copper-plate ABS could be acquired cheaply, so as to greatly cut down the cost of the catalyzed iron inner electrolysis (CIIE) process. Besides many factors that have great influence on the process such as pH, milling velocity, concentration and temperature were studied.
