Assembly plays a key role in the life cycle of products. Fine assembly design can not only guarantee products quality and reliability, but reduce products cost. Virtual assembly is a new manufacturing technology based on information and knowledge integration. It is one of the important applications of VR technology to design and manufacture fields. The high-speed development of manufacture will inevitably improve the development of virtual assembly tech.Virtual assembly involves many aspects, such as DFA(Design for Assembly), product layered information representation, assembly sequence planning, assembly movement planning, assembly modeling, real-time collision detection, and assembly performance evaluation, etc. Due to the limited time and ability, this paper does not cover all above technologies.The paper introduces the definitions of VR&VA and the current research situation at home and abroad , explains their theory knowledge, principles and key points from assembly modeling, assembly sequence and assembly path etc. The descriptions of the development, characteristics and functions of Java&Java3D environment are given.The paper takes water pump and clamp as examples,makes some necessary discussion and analysis about assembly process of water pump and clamp utilizing virtual assembly technology, and finally implements the relevant system designs at different levels. The water pump assembly simulation system in Java3D environment is a Web-based application and can meet the demand of present network bandwidth condition. This system has functions such as displaying and hiding assembly motion path, disassembling partially and switching between viewpoints, etc. With small network transmission load, this system is suitable for multi-sited collaboration.The clamp virtual assembly system supports multi-channel interaction.The system has certain practical functions, including virtual hand modeling, gesture definition and recognition, assembly path information editing, data organization ofassembly process? assembly simulation and multimedia setup of virtual environment. The system features friendly interface* multi-channel interaction, availability for Internet transmission, and expansibility etc.
