In this paper, on the basis of knowing to Taiyuan basin structure, by processing analyzed data of soils sample in Taiyuan basin and Taiyuan city, background value of heavy metal elements are calculated, the characters of heavy metals spatial distribution were studied in detail. Then, the single-index assessment model and comprehensive assessment model have been adopted for assessing heavy metals pollution degree in Taiyuan urban soils. At last, the pollution sources were revealed by factors analysis and the pollution monitoring and controlling measures were suggested.According to variations analysis, the urban soils were not obviously polluted with As and Ni, but present pollution of Cd, Hg, Pb, Cr, Cu and Zn in varying degrees in Taiyuan city, Hg is the most predominant pollutant and Cd, Pb subsequent among main heavy metals. The area of high- grade Hg pollut takes over 49% and medium- grade over 20%.The actuality of synthesize pollution is also serious. The area of medium-grade pollut is 11.69%, and high- grade pollution is over 13% .The key pollution sources include industry emissions, burning coal exhaust and traffic emissions. Hg pollution mainly come from burning coal emissions and industry pollution, while Cd and Pb pollution sources are mainly vehicle emissions and industry activities. The crucial countermeasures are controlling industry emissions and adjusting energy resource structure.The assessment result is very close to the reality, which proved that assessment methods adopted in this paper are practical for environment quality assessment and valuable to be applied widely .The research result of factors analysis can sufficiently display characteristics of Taiyuan city as a typical heavy industry city in North China, which proved that factors analysis is feasible in the research of pollution sources.
