With the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) widely used in industry, the organic waste gas exhausted into the air is increasing year after year and the gas is harm to the environment . People pay attention to the disposal of VOCs gradually. In the paper, xylene was studied as typical VOCs and destructed by pulsed discharge plasma in a wire-coaxial reactor. Important parameters which influence on removal efficiency have been investigated, such as the peak voltage, inlet xylene concentration ,residence time ,catalyst and the combination of two same reactors. The output of CO,CO2 was analyzed in the test. The results of the experiment are showed: 1) The good effect of removal of xylene is attained by this method and the decomposition efficiency of xylene has a maximum of 99% by catalyst in the combination of two same reactors. 2) The removal efficiency increases with peak voltage, residence time increment and decreases with inlet concentration increment. 3) In the same condition, the removal efficiency of 1, 3-xylene is different from that of 1, 4-xylene and that of 1, 3-xylene is better. 4) The removal efficiency and the output of CO2 increase in the combination of two same reactors. That shows xylene is removed more entirely. 5) The catalyst can increase the removal efficiency of xylene. The result shows CoO is the best catalyst to remove xylene comparing with CoO, MnO2, Fe2O3. 6) The removal effect is different when catalyst is placed in the first reactor or the second of the combination of two same reactors. 7) The last product of destruction are CO,CO2 and H2O.
