Hexafluoropropene is an important perfluoro-intermediate in the organo-fluoro industry, especially as the monomer of the fluorine-contained materials, and it has various application in industry. There are many synthesis methods to prepare hexafluoropropene which is mainly from the pyrolysis of low fluorine-contained C1~C4 hydrocarbons. Here the recent research progress on the preparation technique of hexafluoropropene is reviewed, and the complication of reaction dynamics and the reaction procedure from tetrafluoroethylene is indicated. Hexafluoropropene is prepared from the pyrolysis of tetrafluoroethylene, and the influence of parameters on the reaction is investigated such as temperature, pressure, material ratio and space velocity(resident time), and the experimental results are analyzed. For further study, the key control step-the dimeric reaction of tetrafluoroethylene to octafluorocyclobutane, is theoretically discussed. Simultaneously, the best reactor type is indicated according to the characters of this reation.
