Aromatics Extractive Distillation through sulfolane developed by RIPP ofSINOPEC, produce high purity benzene and toluene simultaneously by feed ofC6~C8 cut of hydrogenated pyrolysis gasoline. This process was studied inlarge-scale industrial unit. The relationships between products quality and impactingfactors were derived by analyzing and experiment. The relatively better operationparameters have been determined through adjustment and optimization to theAromatics Extraction Unit. The conclusions show that the SED process can produce high quality benzeneand toluene on large industrial unit. The purity of benzene produced is 99.9%~99.99%,and that of toluene is above 99.9%. The content of benzene in raffinate is below 2%.The SED process is easy to operate, has good stability and reliability and wideoperating scale. It can run at the loading capacity from 60% to 110%. The recoveryrate of benzene is above 99.4% and toluene recovery above 98.5%. The loss ofsulfolane in raffinate and mixed aromatics are all below 0.5ppm. The process hasshort flow, low energy consumption, small investment and plant area.By analyzing the energy balance, the factors which affect product quality andalso their relationship, we found that it is difficult to control the inlet temperature ofED column effectively. One of the most effective way to solve this problem is toadd cooler to the lean solvent pipeline. After comprehensive analysis and comparison between SED and other majoraromatics manufacturing processes, we get a conclusion that the process of SED is theupdated process for aromatics production in China by now and has leading status inthe world. The successful startup and stable running of AEU in SECCO mean thatSED process developed by RIPP has been entirely gone into large industrial operationstage. Because of many advantages of SED process, we can imagine it will becomeone of the main manufacturing processes in aromatics production.
