Diamond cutting is a very important factor in its classification standard of 4C for the brilliance ,fire, gleaming are the main reason of diamond's brilliance. The best brilliance is what the modern diamond cutting pursuits.It is very important to study the testing technology of diamond cutting and develope effective, speedy and accurate identification system in theroy and in practice. Although the techniques of detecting diamond cutting have made great progress,digital image processing algorithms system are still under development because of complex diamond image. Diamond cutting identification system based on digital image processing algorithms is studied in this paper. Hardware structure based on CCD camera, motor and computer is established and a new digital image processing algorithms include the diamond cutting image segmenation,diamond cutting contour extracting,type classification and diamond cutting parameters estimation.This paper introduces firstly the background of this research,reviews briefly the development situation of diamond cutting identification and evaluation at home and abroad and analyzes diamond cutting evaluation standard in China. Based on these researches,the key problems to be solved,research contents and research methods are provided.Image acquisition is the basis of the system This paper designs the hardware components according to requires for diamond cutting identification and puts forward the system's components framework and work model and system function which are based on the techniques of digital image processing.Digital image processing techniques are the center of the system which includes image enhancement,image segmentation and feature extracing and so on.On the basis of a brief review of the development of digital image processing and its application in diamond cutting identification, the exsisting methods are analyzed and some problems to be solved are provided. Through comparison of traditional methods of image enhancement and their chracteristics, threshold is tried to segment the background and the object,In order to acquire detail diamond image information,it is necessory to extract diamond contour.Utilizing the above algorithms,software structure is eatablished and software flow is given in the paper .From experiments,we can see that the algorithms can identify effectively the diamond images that have been acquired and from theory and error,the method and the system are practicable.
