Helical rotor is the most important part of rotor flow meter, and its section shape is normally formed by involute and cycloid. Helical rotor is usually machined by shaped tools or equipped gears in common milling machine. Shaped tools imported from other countrys is always very expensive, but homemade tools can not reach the precisin demand, and in the same time lack of effective detection measures. In the machining process, it always need a few shaped tools to reach the demand, the tool can not be used again after its abrasion, so the machining cost is very high. Now, how to use the common tool instead of the shaped tool to machine the helical rotor is very important and practical.The paper discussed the geometric modeling of helical surface, geometric characteristic of helical rotor surface and its machining principle. Using CAD/CAM software to model the helical rotor, and using its simulation module to simulate the machining process, after postposition proposal to export NC procedures. We successfully used ball-end milling cutter to machine the helical rotor in the 4-axis NC milling machine The machining precision and gear shape accord with technical demand.
