With the rapid development of modern manufacturing, the weakness of traditional CNC system becomes apparent increasingly, such as compatibility, expandability and inflexible human-machine interfaces and so on. The research of Open CNC Systems is becoming one of the most important directions of CNC technology. The purpose of studying Open CNC System is to build a modular, reconfigurable and expandable control system. So the functional flexibility of the CNC system can be improved, and some new demands of the producing can also be responded quickly. The goal of the thesis is to study the Open System Based on PC and build a Test Platform about Multi-functional CNC Milling Machine.Through the discussing of the different courses of the NC technology, the weaknesses of traditional CNC system are summarized and the Open CNC System is pointed out to be the trend of NC technology developed. The introduction of the Open CNC System is mainly about its characteristic, architecture and the status of research in NC field;for Open CNC System, the paper analyses the different types of architecture, such as PC connecting NC, PC embedding NC, Motion Controller+PC and Full Software NC.Test Platform about Multi-functional CNC Milling Machine, which has four freedoms, is founded through the rebuilding of an ordinary milling machine. An Open CNC System is also designed for the test platform in the thesis. IPC+ Motion Controller is selected for the system's hardware structure and modularization is the idea of the software's project. The function modules can be added or deleted if some adjustments want be done to the system, which shows the opening and flexibility of the system. Now some modules have already been completed, such as parameters setting, soft PLC, G code's interpret, G code's perform and expandable function-modules etc. Some experiments about the Open CNC System and expandable function-modules have been done on the test platform.Some methods used to generate the Cutter Location Paths while processing the curved face are also analyzed in the thesis, such as Parametric method, Section Plane method and Iso-scallop method etc. The advantages and disadvantages are pointed out during the comparison ofthese methods. In the end of the paper, the arithmetic of the processing on simple curved face (such as globe and ellipse globe) is studied and the NC programs used to process the surface of ellipse globe are programmed.
