In this paper, in order to improve the were-resistance of cannon steel, laser cladding of chromium powder was investigated. The laser cladding parameters in the conditions of single pass and multi-pass laser cladding were optimized. The microstructure, hardness, wear,etc. of laser cladding specimens were studied by using SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, microhardness tester and wear tester.The results showed that by using the optimized laser cladding parameters, the cladding layer without of pores and cracks can be obtained, and an excellent bonding between the cladding layer and the substrate was gotten with a strong metallurgical interface. The wear-resistance of laser cladding layer and plasma spraying coating was improved by 11.5 and 6 times respectively. The reason is that compareding with plasma spraying coating, the microstructure of laser cladding layer was in good quality.
