Steel converter is the main equipment in steel-making, and the drive mechanism, trunnion bearing, is the key component of steel converter. Trunnion bearing is rolling bearing with low speed and high load, if faults such as point erosion, peeling and roller fragmentation, happen in the manufacture process, it will bring vast economic losses, and will take much time and costs to maintain it. At present, the means of monitoring converter bearing in steel mills is uncultured, generally depending on worker's experiences, and the abuse bought by the periodic replace of rolling bearing occurs, so it is necessary to design and develop a set of reliable, applied, and advanced system of online monitoring and faults diagnosis.Virtual Instruments is the combination of computer system and instruments system technology, and it surpasses the limits of data processing, display, transmission etc., depending on functions of computer system and combining of corresponding hardware. Nowadays in the industry, LabVIEW of National Instruments is one of the most popular programming languages.The faults mechanism and vibration characteristics of rolling bearing was deeply summarized and analyzed in the paper, and the methods of vibration signal analysis and faults diagnosis were also introduced, and then the features of different methods were compared. In the basis of the manufacture condition of steel mill, by appropriately choosing hardware, such as acceleration sensors, eddy-current transducers, signal conditioner, data acquisition card, network transmission equipment and etc., and adopting the diagnosis methods of time domain analysis and frequency domain analysis, the drive mechanism online monitoring and faults diagnosis system of steel converter based on virtual instruments was successfully developed and organized, and LabVIEW 7.1, which is a powerful graphical programming language of virtual instruments, was applied.The applied and scientific means and tools was provided through development of the system for drive mechanism online monitoring and faults diagnosis in steel mill, and the abuse bought by periodical maintenance would be improved in nowadays steel mill, the fatal accidents and enormous economic losses would be voided, and the maintenance time would be shortened too, resource and maintenance costs was saved,...
