During the improving and innovative process of TLC, some electronic technology is applied inevitably to achieve the purpose and improve the study quality, which is the reason that the current work is carried out.The current work mainly includes two aspects that are relatively independent: the study of planar electrochromatography (PEC) and that of the sample applicator in TLC. The commonness of the two aspects is relative to the electronic technology, but the later serves the former.As sample application, the plug of the micro syringe is pushed by stepping motor controlled by microcomputer. The sample solution is sprayed onto the surface of thin layer without contacting it at the stream of gas. Meanwhile, the thin layer or syringe can be pulled to make horizontal motion by stepping motor with constant speed. Thus, besides high quality dot shape samples, band shape sample application can also be achieved on the thin layer with high quality, which be considered as unique function of applicator.A remarkably feature in our work is that with the unique design, such a complicated device like semi-automatic sample applicator has been accomplished under the condition of the ordinary laboratory in our country without any help from others. The structure, principle and preparation of this device has been described in this paper. More research has indicated that although the automatic sample spray is the best way of sample application at present, the process of spray is not always uniform and the solution of this problem is to apply faster application speed.The characteristic of planar electrochromatograpy is that faster separation speed is expected to achieve by using the electroosmotic flow to drive the mobile phase.
