In this thesis, the UV spectrophotometry and colloid titration were used to determine the monomer conversion rate in diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) and acrylamide (AM) radical copolymerization, providing a simple and convenient method to measure the content of AM in copolymerization reaction. The methods to control constitution of the copolymers were investigated. The weight average molecular weight, rms radius, second virial coefficient of DADMAC—AM copolymer in different solvent were studied by multiple angle laser light scattering for the first time. The studies offered theoretical foundation for improvement in performance of flocculating agents. The technology of the high performance gel permeation chromatograph-multiple angle laser light scattering was also used to study the DADMAC—AM copolymer. The results showed that DADMAC—AM copolymer in NaCl aqueous solution exhibited more extended conformation. They are flexible random coil. The equation of Mark-Houwink for the copolymers is determined. It provides a convenient method to determine the weight average molecular weight of DADMAC — AM copolymer in a measured applicable range. The studies have large practical values.
