Oxidation pond is one kind of wastewater treatment establishments, which is featured by less investment, energy consume and management expenses. Oxidation pond is widely applied to treat municipal sewage and various industrial wastewaters in the developed or developing countries , and have obtained remarkable environmental benefits and societal efficiency. In recent years, Shengli oil field adopted it to treat oil extraction wastewater, which contained concentrated salt, and the effect was fairly good. However, because of the complexity of reactions in the oxidation pond and the variety of factors which influenced the removal of the organic materials, design methods based on rigid theory have not be founded so far, and the design is still limited in existing experience data and formulas, which impedes the development of oxidation pond technology. Therefore, it is necessary to make further study on the mathematical models of oxidation pond and establish universal mathematical model to guide the optimization design and large-scale design, which is of great importance to promote the incessant development of the oxidation pond wastewater treatment technology.In this research, acid bright red GR was used as tracer to make trace experiments on single and baffled oxidation pond under various conditions and the current characteristics and mass transfer conditions was studied. The results indicated that the flow form in the oxidation pond model was obviously different from the ideal plug flow and complete-mixing flow model, but the tandem model combined of plug flow model with vertical diffusion(PFD) and Complete-mixing model could describe the characteristics of model oxidation pond very well.
