In this paper, a novel technology, i.e. composite flame retardant was established to compound TPU/MCA and TPU/APP, a promising halo-free flame retardant with high performance and low cost. Based on it, POM base materials with efficient flame retardancy and good comprehensive properties were successfully prepared, and the mechanism was studied systematically.Flame retardant POM composites were prepared using TPU as carrier to introduce melamine cyanurate (MCA) into POM matrix, and even dispersion of MCA in polymer matrix was obtained. The prepared flame retardant POM possesses good mechanical properties and flame-retardancy. The flame retarding mechanism of MCA on POM was that formaldehyde and formate acid were absorbed by melamine resulting from melamine cyanurate (MCA) pyrolysis and temperature of burning materials was reduced because melamine cyanurate (MCA) sublimation absorbed heat and thermalplastic polyurethane(TPU) absorbed formaldehyde and enhanced stability of POM composites.In order to improve POM composites flame-retardancy, flame retardant POM composites of thermalplastic polyurethane(TPU) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and melamine were prepared using the same way. This flame retardant POM has excellent flame-retardancy. The flame retarding mechanism of APP on POM was also investigated by TG and GC-MS.
