Camellia oleifera Abel is one of peculiar tree species, which are widely cultivated in the southeast of China. Sasanquasaponin were obtained from seeds of Camellia oleifera Abel by squeezed. Sasanquasaponin were natural surfactants and biochemicals, found in many plants, and they were abundant in the seeds and leaves of Camellia oleifera Abel. The biological activity and medical value of sasanquasaponin, such as its anticancer and fungistatic property, have been attracting attentions. Sasanquasaponin were one of the best natural nonionic surfactants with various functions such as antibacterial, antioxidation, anti-inflammatory activities and pesticide. The objective of the present study was to evaluate antioxidantive activity and structure identification of sasanquasaponin, in order to offer basis for exploitation of natural additives.Firstly, sasanquasaponins were isolated and purified by TLC and silica column chromatography. Sasanquasaponin were hydrolyzed and then obtained twocompounds------saponin and sugar. On the basis of UV, IR, MS, 1HNMR spectra,13CNMR spectra and m.p., and also by comparison with their spectral data reported in literatures, the structures of compounds were preliminarily identified as 16a-hydroxy-21-O-angelicaal (cis)-3-O-(a-D-glucuronopyranosyl)-12(13)-oleanen-a-D-glucopyranosyl; 16a, 22a, 28-trihydroxy-22-O-angelicaal(cis)-23 -oxo-12(13) -oleanen-3-O-(a-D-rhamnose) -a-D-glucuronopyranosyl.Secondly, the antioxidant activity of sasanquasaponin from Camellia oleifera Abel was determined by various antioxidant assays, including superoxide anion radical-scavenging, hydroxyl radical-scavenging and reducing power on using the ferric thiocyanate, inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation, thiobarbituric acid and chemiluminescence methods. The results indicated that sasanquasaponin can clear active oxygen radicals produced in the chemical reactions and had stronger inhibiting ability of the oxidation of 2'-deoxyribose than sulfuourea. Further studies are in progress to investigate the antioxidant and prooxidant mechanisms of sasanquasapionin at physiological levels in vivo and identify the active compounds present in this plant. Finally, the possible antioxide mechanism was analyzed between the structure and antioxidant of sasanquasaponins in theory. Sasanquasaponins were stable...
