The paper summarizes property, sources, distribution and behavior and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), and introduces behavior and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the lake(environment). The PAHs which are 16 priority PAHs listed by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were used as the goal pollutant in order to study the content and distribution of PAHs in water and the sediment of the BaiHua Lake. The main conclusions have been reached as followings:1. A sensitive, rapid and accurate method for extraction and determination of US EPA 16 priority pollutant PAHs from samples has been developed by modification of conventional method in this study. This method is only based on sonication extraction with dichloromethane and purification by silica gel for sediment samples, and solid-phase extraction for water samples. The separation and determination of PAHs is carried out by high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) by using gradient elution and ultroviolet (UV) absorption detection.2. The variation characteristics of composition and concentration of PAHs in water and sediment of BaiHua Lake. Total sixteen PAHs concentration range from 0.4213μg/L to 0.7606μg/L in water, and total PAHs concentration vary from 180.7ng/g to 314.2ng/g in surface layer of sediment, and total PAHs concentration vary from 63.2 ng/g to 317.6ng/g in the core BH-0318.It is clear that 2,3and4-ring PAHs dominated total PAHs burden in waters, but on average 4-5-6ring PAHs is dominant in total PAHs burden in sediment. The result showed that the BaiHua Lake had been polluted by PAHs. Some of PAHs has harmed the biology in the...
