Magnesium alloys have many good characters such as light mass, high specific strength and rigidity, good casting properties, etc. So they have gained great attention in theoriotical study and practical application. In recent years, researches on magnesium alloys have been done all over the world. The paper outlined the history and present condition of magnesium industry. The aspects of resource, production and consumption of magnesium around the world were introduced, so did the exploitation and utilization of magnesium and magnesium alloys.Magnesium alloys are strain rate sensitive materials and generally have bad plasticity. Utilizing superplastic forming technology, the precision forming of magnesium alloy components with the complicated configuration can be realized. Of the wrought magnesium alloys, the commercial AZ31 magnesium alloy is the most popular one for commercialized application.
