With the fast development of the highway construction in our country, the demand of the cationic asphalt emulsion is increasing owing to its excellent capabilities. Now the emulsifier prepared asphalt emulsion exists some shortcoming, e.g. single variety, the high price etc., and most of them couldn't satisfy the requirement of slow crack when applied to slurry seal technology in highway maintenance, so the paper mostly researchs and develops a new cationic asphalt emulsifier, which has the moderate price and superiority of emulsifying property.Firstly, dimethyl alkyl hydroxyl propyl ammonium chloride is synthesized by the direct reaction of C16-18 tertiary amine with epichlorohydrin by the introduction of traditional production technique. The performance test shows the emulsifying power of the emulsifier is ordinary, its antistripping performance is poor. The mixing test with rock material indicates the emulsifier is belong to middle set type one.After production technique is adjusted, Other asphalt emulsifiers of trimethyl alkyl methyl ammonium sulfate, biquanternary ammonium salt asphalt emulsifier also are synthesized. The performance test shows the emulsifying power of the two emulsifiers are dissatisfactory.Technical lignin is a by-product of pulping industry and also the main environment pollutants. The modified lignin using as the cationic asphalt emulsifier not only has well emulsifying performance, cheapness, but also is beneficial to reduce environmental pollution caused by pulping industry and saves unregenerate resources. Lignin-amine type asphalt emulsifiers is prepared based on chemical characteristic and some similarity to asphalt.The lignin quarternary ammonium salt is developed by the reaction of the lignin with the intermediate-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, which is prepared from epichlorohydrin and trimethylamine aqueous solution.
