The powders of yttrium aluminum compound oxides are generally called by a series of compounds formed from Y2O3 and Al2O3. including YAlO3(YAP), Y4Al2O3(YAM), Y3Al5O12(YAG), etc. Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAG) is a promising material used as host for phosphors and solid-state laser because of its excellent mechanical, thermal and optical properties. Since there are many disadvantages of the traditional methods adopted to prepare the powders such as the more complex technics, the higher sintered temperature, the bigger granularity, the applications of powders are limited. A new method to synthesize YAG is becoming more and more important.In the paper aluminium isopropoxide is prepared with isopropanol used as the solvent and iodine used as the catalyst through the contrast of three catalysts. At the same time the catalyzing mechanism is discussed. Yttrium isopropoxide is prepared with aluminium chloride as the catalyst. At the same time the productive ratio is counted and the catalyzing mechanism is discussed. Yttrium and aluminum double metal alkoxides are attained by the reaction of Yttrium isopropoxide and aluminium. By controlling all kinds of factors which affect the performance of the powders, such as the amount of water, the concentration of the alkoxides, the hydrolyzed temperature, some single factor experiments have been done during the hydrolyzing process of the alkoxides. Then the production is dried through four methods including nature drying, oven drying, microwave drying, direct heating drying. After drying, the production is calcined in different temperature and the yttrium aluminium powders are prepared.The results show that the minimal concentration of iodine in the isopropanol which is the catalyst in the preparation of aluminium isopropoxide is 1.3mg/ml(the ratio of the quality and the volume) and the ratio of the aluminium and the alcohol is less than 100mg/ml.
