In this paper, the solution polymerization —vinyl acetate(VAc) is the material, methanol(MeOH) is the solvent and 2,2'-Azo-bis-isobutyroni-trile(AIBN) is the initiator —was studied. Factors affecting the solution polymerization of vinyl acetate including reaction temperature, reaction time, stirring rate, the concentration of methanol and the percent of initiator were investigated by the single-variable experiments. The result shows that reaction time, the concentration of methanol and the percent of initiator are the main influencing factors with the optimum conditions of reaction temperature is 65°C and stirring rate is 150r/min, that the average polymerization degree of PVA is decreasing with the concentration of methanol and the percent of initiator rise, and at the beginning it increases but some time later decreases with reaction time goes and that the polymerization conversion is increasing with reaction time and the percent of initiator enhance. By orthogonal design method, the relative importance of affecting polymerization was studied The result shows that the order of affecting polymerization degree is the concentration of methanol, the percent of initiator, reaction time, that the order of affecting polymerization conversion is reaction time, the percent of initiator, the...
