Engineering ceramics (EC) has a lot of excellent performances of physics and chemistry, such as high temperature resistance, erosive resistance and high hardness. Ultrasonic machining is one of the available methods to machine the engineering ceramics, for the ultrasonic machining is not affected by the part's conductivity and chemistry performance. But the traditional ultrasonic machining method only can be used to drill hole and copy machining, so the main purpose of this thesis is that how to realize the 2-D & 3-D ultrasonic machining. The fundamental principles of ultrasonic machining, the material removal mechanisms involved and the effect of operating parameters on material removal rate were reviewed. Based on the anterior research of the 2-axis ultrasonic machining, the effects on the machining speed and accuracy of several factors, such as feed, static pressure, the degree of the grinding material and so on, were studied primarily. The model of material removal rate of ultrasonic contour evolution machining was established.Meanwhile, a experimental equipment for 3-D ultrasonic machining was designed to study the 3-D ultrasonic machining processing representation. We manufactured a 3-D shape in the glass brick, did a lot of experiments to learn the main relationship between the static pressure and processing velocity, and try to find the optimum motion quantity of the Z direction to get the quickest processing effective and the most excellent surface quality. In addition, all the results are provided theoretical and experimental references for the further study on the technology of ultrasonic contour evolution machining.
