ABR is a kind of new effect anaerobic reactor. It is not only made more progress in research and applied aspect of high concentration organic wastewater, but also attracted a more and more attention in treating low concentration wastewater.A 10L ABR was seeded with the anaerobic granular sludge, the influent was a sucrose based synthetic wastewater. Investigating the reactor start-up , the performance of the reactor and the shape of the anaerobic granular sludge at several organic loading rates(OLR) in the temperature of 35±1°C. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 24h during the experiment. The influent COD concentration was 500,1000,1500,2000mg/L during the start-up, the COD removal got 93.48% and kept stable after 42 days, the start-up finished.After the start-up, the ABR continuously run 3 months at the OLR of 3,4,5,6,8kgCOD/m3·d, each OLR stabilized for 18 days, investigated the anaerobic granular sludge, PH, COD,VFA and biogas in every compartment.The result indicated that ABR seeded with the anaerobic granular sludge needed shorter start-up time than seeded with floccule sludge. the size lowed along the reactor. By the end of the experiment, the color of the anaerobic granular sludge in the first compartment had changed from black to offwhite, the color of other compartments sludge had not obvious change, but the size and concentration had increased.ABR had a favorable effect treating the influent which was a sucrose based synthetic wastewater it could resist OLR shock, COD removal was above 85%, the great mass of COD was removed in first two compartments. When OLR was 5 kgCOD/m3·d, COD removal got max, it is illuminated that the performance of the reactor was best. When OLR was above 5kgCOD/m3·d, COD removal began to descend, but not obvious.When the reactor run in low OLR, PH of the first compartment presented acidic, while others kept litmusless and steady. When OLR was above 5 kgCOD/m3·d, PH of the first tow compartments presented acidic, the third compartment was litmusless. At various OLR , the main matter of the organic substance degeneration in the reactor was acetic acid, at the same time had a spot of . The concentration of the acid descended along the reactor. The main gas in the first compartment was CO2, while the gas of other compartments was CH4.
