Isopropyl acetate, which is widely used in the industry of paintings, printing inks, binders for its excellent alkali-resistance, hydrophobicity and good capacity to dissolve plastics and acetic acid based fibers, is an important intermediate in organic synthesis. Isopropyl acetate has the similar physical and chemical properties to ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, which makes it possible to replace them (also butanone) in many cases. Therefore, isopropyl acetate is considered as"Solvent in the future".Traditional process to manufacture isopropyl acetate is by esterification of acetic acid and isopropanol, using H2SO4 as catalyst. Isopropanol is the product of propylene by hydration, at the same time, water is generated in the esterification. The defects of catalyst H2SO4 in traditional process lie in the serious corrosion of apparatus, inconvenience in the separation product and difficulty in recycle. In addition, the conversion is always low due to the restrict of chemical equilibrium. If the synthesis of isopropyl acetate was manufactured by acetic acid and propylene, it would be a perfect atom economical technical route. So the green synthesis of acetic acid reacts with propylene to produce isopropyl acetate was researched in this paper. Some influencing factors such as kind of catalysts, the dosage of catalysts, temperature, pressure, time and the speed of agitator and so on were studied in an inner lining Ti autoclave. The suitable reaction conditions were obtained by using the optimum catalyst. Reaction temperature was 130℃,the speed of agitator was 800rpm,the dosage of catalyst was 7.5% of the dosage of acetic acid, reaction pressure was 1.5MPa and time was 6h.The conversion of acetic acid and the selectivity of propylene reached 85.43% and 98.52%, respectively. Distillation of the esterification product was also carried out. The purity of isopropyl acetate after the distillation reached 99.8% and the product was colorless and lucidThe kinetics of the esterification of acetic acid and propylene to produce isopropyl acetate was studied in this paper. An apparatus was designed in order to gain...
