The economic development of China has been restricted by the factors of water resource shortage, energy sources shortage and aquatic pollution. Efficiently eliminating pollution of water and lowing cost of water treatment are not only the important errand of environment protection, but also the important errand of water resource protection. It is significant to control the emission concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus to prevent eutrophication in close water systems. It is also important to combine phosphorus removal and denitrification in one system to reduce the requirement for metabolic substrates in treating municipal wastewater.Environmental bio-engineering laboratory of Dalian university of technology developed a new combined 3R (means carbon removal, nitrogen removal and phosphorus removal) bioreactor. In this combined bioreactor, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal processes could run simultaneously. Fibrous carriers were packed in the reactor. The reactor was divided into several zones and different bacteria grew dominantly in different zones. Wastewater, driven by aeration, flow through different zones of the reactor at different stages to be treated. As a result, organic pollutants, nitrogen and phosphorus were removed. In the lab-scale experiment, the treatment effect is good enough.This paper introduces the combined 3R bioreactor which included the ideas of design, the characteristics of technics, the conformation of reactor, the fashions of running and the performances of decarbonization, nitrogen removal and dephosphorization. Explain how it can combined biological phosphorus removal and denitrification in one system. Expound the advantages of the new combined bioreactor, such as efficient, economical, low cost, automated control, convenient, multifunctional, and wide use.This study is a preparative for the engineering application of this new bioreactor. Discuss the design and the calculation method of this new reactor, includes the chosen and calculation of technics parameters, the conformation of main reactor and how adjust the operation mode in engineering application. Ascertain the parameters of design, the load of reactor, the form, size and material of components. Construct the reactor in the abstract, and draw the technics chart.The strategy of simultaneous loading and draining was explored. Simulation study at lab-scale reactors was conducted to investigate the hydraulic retention time distribution function under various hydraulic loading rates.
